5 Ideas for Organizing Your Laundry Room

A laundry room organization system is essential to getting your laundry done. You don’t want to spend all day working on washing, drying, and folding clothes or linens.  Luckily, there are plenty of ways to enhance that particular area.

No matter the size of your space, these simple tips will help you get organized:

  • Utilize vertical space
  • Consider cabinets
  • Get creative with bins, baskets, and organizers
  • Make a folding station
  • Install a pull-down drying rack

Utilize Vertical Space

The vertical space in your laundry room is probably not being utilized to its fullest. Even small spaces have ample room on the walls, behind doors, and even on the sides of cabinets. A great way to get your space organized is to use your walls more effectively.

Adding a couple of decorative, sturdy hooks will get your ironing board off the floor and out of the way. That opens up more floor space and helps make your room look bigger. Hanging pegboards or Slatwall racks up can help you organize smaller items, and it offers yet another place to hang bins for clothespins, dryer sheets, and other light items.

The experts at Apartment Therapy recommend using magnetic clips or baskets for items that tend to get lost, like socks. Simply stick them onto the sides of your washer or dryer.

Laundry Room Cabinets

Consider Cabinets

If your laundry room is lacking cabinets, then you are missing out on a great space maximization tool. Cabinets keep bulkier items neatly and securely stored, and you can enhance them further with bins to categorize cleaning and laundry items, such as:

  • Detergents
  • Fabric softeners
  • Dryer sheets
  • Laundry sanitizers
  • Stain removers
  • Lint rollers
  • Household cleaning supplies

There are tons of options when it comes to colors, styles, and finishes. One thing you can be certain about is their durability, regardless of whether you opt for floating or sink-base cabinets.   Plus, they'll be high enough off the ground to keep little hands from opening them.

Get Creative with Bins, Baskets, and Organizers

Bins, baskets, and organizers allow you to have some fun when organizing your laundry room. Keep detergents, softeners, stain removers, and any other items you use often in a bin at the front of the cabinets. Infrequent users can be placed in the back.  Also, remember to always label your organizers. You don’t want to accidentally bleach your colors!

Instead of keeping bulky, heavy detergent containers near the front of your cabinet, consider putting some of the liquid or dry detergents inside smaller decanters or jars as Martha Stewart suggests. Then keep the jars near the front of the cabinet. This will take up less prime space, and if you have open cabinets or glass front doors, the jars will give it an extra clean look.

Folding Station

Make a Folding Station

You can create a folding station inside your laundry room even if you are tight on space, like this example from Woman’s Day. All you need is a countertop installed over your washer and dryer, which works perfectly for front load units.

If you have a top load unit, consider creating a folding rack out of plywood. Unfold it when you need a dry, flat surface for folding, and fold it up when you’re done.

Install a Pull-Down Drying Rack

Certain clothes need to hang to dry, such as delicates, hand wash only items and certain fabrics. Installing a pull-down drying rack gives you the perfect area to dry without taking up a lot of space. You could install it in a corner of your laundry room, so you have space to walk around when it’s in use. Then unfold it when you’re done.

If you are working with more space, hang a drying rod or hooks from the ceiling. Like vertical space, ceiling space is often underutilized but offers plenty of area for extra storage. Your clothes will look great, and you won’t have to hang them to dry in your bathroom, bedroom, or another highly used location in your home.

Conclusion

Laundry rooms have more space than meets the eye at first. With some creativity, you can have an organized and practical room where everything is easy to find. Give these simple tips a try in your own laundry room and watch it transform into a fully-functioning space.
