S&S Cabinets was established more than a score ago, in 1986, by two friends, Don Santos (left, in the photo) and Del Sullivan (right). Don was in the market for garage cabinets for his house in Fremont, and the nearest garage cabinet company he found was in Sacramento! The two friends had a cellular business then, and both figured the garage cabinet business, with no competition in the San Francisco Bay, had a better future than their cellular phone business, which was then being threatened by the entry of large retail and mass merchants.

So the two gentlemen phased themselves out of selling cellular phones, rolled their sleeves, and dove into the fabrication and assembly of garage cabinets. Both Del and Don were long in enthusiasm, but short in experience. The first office/factory was a shop at the back of Del's house in Danville. It was an exciting time, no doubt, but also quite hectic and at times, stressful. The duo had to figure out how to run the business quickly: line up suppliers, plan and implement marketing, solicit sales, build the cabinets, and deliver the products.

The two men proved equal to the task, and in less than six months, the business outgrew Del's shop and S&S had to be relocated to a 1,900 sq ft office/warehouse in Fremont.

The business progressed steadily and within 3 years, the company expanded to its current location, a 6,000 sq ft facility in Fremont. In addition to garage cabinets, S&S diversified into building closet organizers. Today, a big number of new business now comes from repeat customers and referrals.

Del and Don are both local folks. Del used to teach Math and Industrial Arts at the Hopkins Junior High in Fremont. While Del was born in Elko, NV, and has lived around the world (his father was with the Army), he considers the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically, Fremont, home. Don, on the other hand, was born and raised in Fremont, and has witnessed the evolution of Fremont from a quiet and sleepy town into the large modern community it is today.
