How to Get Kids’ Closets Organized

Damon Cox • Jul 01, 2019

Are your children naturally neat, clean, and tidy? While a few kids are, many are not. The reasons for this are many: Children just don’t have the life experience to understand the benefits of keeping things tidy, they can’t always reach or manage the organizational components they have in their bedrooms, they have very short attention spans, and they simply would prefer to spend their time playing or doing anything other than picking up. There are other reasons as well, of course. As a parent, however, you might feel as though you’re constantly battling the clutter in your child’s room, and that’s no fun. Getting his or her closet under control is a big step toward keeping the rest of the room tidy. Read on to learn about how you can organize your children’s closets on your own as well as with the help of S & S Cabinets.

Put in Kid-Sized Closet Organizers

Imagine if your clothing rods in your closet were eight feet up rather than six or so feet off of the ground. Wouldn’t it be awkward and frustrating to try to hang your clothing? It would be difficult, if not impossible, to get the hangers onto the rods. When you wanted to take something down, you’d probably end up pulling on it, hoping that it would slide off of the hanger without stretching or, worse, ripping. Or maybe you’d balance on a step-stool, hoping not to slip off of it while trying to find what you were looking for overhead. It would be easier to simply store the items on a chair or elsewhere in your bedroom than to struggle with such an inconvenient system.

This is likely how your child feels if his or her clothing rod is at a regular adult height. A child who is three or four feet tall cannot easily reach most standard rods. They might be able to pull the clothing down, but it results in stretched-out necklines and other items falling to the floor. The way to remedy this situation is to put in organizers that make sense given the age and ability of your child.

Young children often do better with cubbies and drawers than with hangers and rods. This is because it takes less manual dexterity to place folded items into a cubby than it does to put a shirt or a pair of pants on a hanger and then hang that hanger properly without snagging other items. Pare Down Their Belongings

Once you have the right organizers in place in your child’s closet, you might notice that he or she has way too many belongings. While you might switch out clothing with the seasons, your child probably does not need dozens of outfits to choose from. Consider paring down to two weeks’ worth of clothing for each season. That will open up a lot of room in the closet and it will also limit the potential for mess. You will need outfits for playing outside, outfits for going to daycare or school, and outfits for nicer occasions, so be sure to save enough of each. Consider donating the rest to charity or putting them away for the next child or a younger cousin.

Make Organizing Part of the Daily Routine

Even if the closet is neat and tidy today, it will take some work to keep it that way. The easiest way to keep a space clean is to devote a few minutes to it each day. Decide when a good time in your day would be to help your child work on his or her closet for five minutes. This might be in the morning if you and your child stay home, but if you are going to work and he or she is off to school, the evening might be better.

It doesn’t have to be a big project. Simply pick up any clothing items that have fallen on the floor and straighten drawers or hangers. That’s it! When it’s done daily, the mess should be very minimal. This not only keeps things in check but it also sets up your child with some good habits to take with him or her into adulthood.

Create an Appealing Closet System

You can make your child’s closet more fun by looking at child-friendly options. Allowing your child to choose the finish of his or her closet systemcan inspire them to want to use the products. In addition, making room for the various treasures of childhood will keep the space fresh and attractive. For example, a net to hold stuffed animals or a jewelry tray meant to hold your child’s small items like hair accessories or pins are fun and easy to integrate into the storage system.

Think about your child’s preferences when it comes to the colors of the walls, decals, and even the flooring. A small rug in his or her favorite color can be a cute and cozy addition. Start off with a custom closet design and then the sky’s the limit as far as the details you decide to add!
